It is hard to call Australia as shogi country. There is no shogi amateurs played anywhere in Australia on a regular or club basis. Australian shogi players live in different states of Australia. It is known that the shogi players exist in such cities as Melbourne and Brisbane. That's why they play via brainking or on Dojo.
But it is known that at least one player from Australia participated in shogi tournament. Simon Morgan took part in the 1st International Shogi Forum in Japan (July 1999).
From Australian players this time is most widely known Darren Paull. Darren is one of the participants of Shogi-L and this time he takes part in 13th Meijin Dojo tournament. It is also interesting that Darren found opponents to play shogi in Japanese Go club in Australia.
